Introduction
How sensitive are we to the importance of context? This conference will open with a discussion of person centred health care. We will examine the balance between generic models for treatment and compare them with models which emerge from an individualized assessment of the case. The illustrative cases will include examples of chronic and subacute organic disease, in addition to functional, metabolic and emotional illness states.
- Word, Voice and Mind in Medicine
1. Word
Health care begins with the word of the patient. We will discuss the use of words to convey life context and time-sensitive meaning, in addition to the well understood elements of narrative, sensations, beliefs and emotions. Clinical case studies will illustrate how contextual information from our patient can provide improved strategies for treatment.
2. Voice
We will enter into detailed discussion of speech-pattern analysis. Voice quality, pitch, pitch variability and realtime spectrographic analysis will be used to discuss the voice in health and illness. Case studies before and after treatment will be used to show how the voice reflects change in well-being. Video recordings of live patient interviews will be used to illustrate the importance of prosody. We will view examples of 'animal', 'plant' and 'mineral' patterns of speech and discuss those attributes of speech that can be used in case analysis. (As part of the social programme there will be an optional workshop entitled 'Holistic Care of the Performing Voice'. In addition to a presentation on the therapeutics of the voice, there will be an optional group singing activity to illustrate the principles of healthy vocal habits - and give delegates a chance to have some fun!)
3. Mind
Drawing from the themes of the Word and the Voice in Medicine, we will extend our models for illness to the narrative. Participants will be given new guidance on the identification of hidden etiologies, time-lines, life themes and intrinsic blocks to cure. Each concept will be illustrated with a long case study followed a practical workshop.
