Twenty years ago he stopped completing insurance
forms, feeling that more often than not it required him to
“fudge” something, be it procedure or diagnosis codes. He
also felt that this process increased people’s sense of being
“sick.” So he wrote a letter to his patients informing them
that he would stop filling out their insurance forms and that
his contribution would be to lower his fees by half. Many
patients left, but those that stayed appreciated this arrange-
ment—one he felt was less susceptible to manipulation by
patients or doctors.
He practiced classical homeopathy full-time until his
very recent retirement. It was a general practice with a
cross section of human sorrows and joys.
Looking back, he remembered a saying of one of his
teachers, “My own grateful heart is all I need,” which he
believed rang true. Dr. Bahder thanked us for the opportu-
nity to share a little of his own story with his fellow ABHt
Diplomates.
