th
2014, the Glees Academy of Ho-
meopathic Physicians celebrated its 10
th
anniversary
in Lahnstein, Germany. Members and supporters of this
loosely organized institution gave several presentations
highlighting the Academy’s first decade. Glees Academy
holds one of the world´s largest homœopathic libraries and
offers structured homœopathic training for physicians in
the Academy as well as lectures for medical students at the
Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bonn. It has pub-
lished nearly 50 monographs of homœopathic remedies.
These monographs contain the available primary homœo-
pathic literature of two hundred years (remedy provings
and clinical symptoms clearly distinguished) and will be
the basis for a reliable future repertory.
Beginning
In his opening speech at the anniversary, the Academy´s
founder and director, Klaus-Henning Gypser, MD, spoke
about his considerations for creating such a center to study
and teach homœopathy and offer the homœopathic com-
munity a place for research and collegial exchange. After
training with Jost Künzli, MD (1915-1992) in St. Gallen,
Switzerland, Will Klunker, MD (1923-2002) in Heiden,
Switzerland and Georg von Keller, MD (1919-2003) in
Tübingen, Germany, he had planned for years to establish
an institution to get the desperately needed revision of
the homœopathic materia
medica on its way. During
the history of homœopathy
such a project had been
repeatedly announced, but
efforts by Constantine Her-
ing (1800-1880), Timothy
Field Allen (1837-1902) and
others had never been suc-
cessful. Dr. Gypser´s friend
and philosophical mentor,
Prof. Dr. Ekkehard Fräntzki,
advised in the project´s early
phase to combine the train-
ing of colleagues with the necessary research work since
such an immense undertaking could not be launched by a
handful of co-workers.
In 2003, two old houses were purchased in the village
of Glees situated in the hills of the Eifel, just across the
ridge of the volcanic Lake Laach. The buildings needed
extensive renovation before they could meet the require-
ments for classroom teaching and scientific research. This
was accomplished in less than a year. The two buildings
were linked into one and now consist of a classroom,
administrative office, research facilities and an extensive
homœopathic library.
Library
The library combines the private collection of Dr. Gyps-
er, the library of the late Dr. von Keller and the libraries
of the late lay-collector Chris Ellithorp (1946-2004) and
of Dr. Pilaka Krishnamurty, thus making the Glees library
one of the largest homœopathic libraries world-wide. The
library´s facilities are available by appointment for re-
search. To secure the independence of the Academy, finan-
cial obligations for repair and maintenance of the buildings
and library as well as salaries were borne by the Gypser
family.
Teaching
After decades of therapeutic experience flanked by re-
search, international lecturing, publishing books and editing
journals, Dr. Gypser set up a structured beginners´ course
for medical doctors wishing
to study homœopathy. En-
rollment is generally limited
to ten licensed physicians.
Held on twenty seven Sat-
urdays, this basic course in
homœopathy takes eighteen
months to complete, culmi-
nating in a final test, and can
be followed by an advanced
course of nine Saturdays.
Students have access to Dr.
Gypser´s medical office to
see patients with him. There
are other seminars with varying focal points such as the
study of materia medica, the use of repertories (Bönning-
hausens Pocket Book, Boger-Bönninghausen´s Character-
